Candle Lighting
The Second Candle – a candle of Preparation

Reader 1: Christmas is coming! Are you prepared? Are you ready? Are you counting down?

Reader 2: Have you got the tree up? Food and presents bought? Cards sent? Are you prepared for the time you will spend with family, friends or colleagues? And what about all those annoying Christmas advertisements you have already seen too many times? Are you prepared?

Reader 1: Are we prepared to invite in those who are lonely or sick or troubled? Are we prepared to reach out to a broken world? Are we prepared to bring Christ’s love?

Reader 2: Christ is coming! As we prepare for our Christmas celebrations we light this second candle as a sign that we are prepared to be the light of Christ, bringing his healing presence to a needy world.

Lighting of the second candle

Prayer: Lord of all, remind us of the things that are truly important. Come to this world, come to us, come to all people and bring the joy and justice that few expect but all need. Amen.

Intercession

Lord who comes to serve,
as we prepare to celebrate Christmas
we know that we are fortunate to have all that we have.
When we look beyond the glittering decorations we see real need,
and we ask that this Advent you will prepare us to meet a lost world.

Show us the homeless, the wanderers, the refugees and asylum seekers.
So much of our Bible was written by or about wanderers
so we ask that you will watch over all who are uprooted.
[we think of… or brief pause]
Help us to meet mistrust with love and compassion;
Lord, prepare us to serve.

Show us the lonely people around us:
those who have nobody to talk to, those who have got out of the habit of talking.
Speak to the hearts of those who are lonely amid the crowds and the bustle.
[we think of… or brief pause]
Help us to bring life and laughter where there is silence;
Lord, prepare us to serve.

Show us the broken and the burdened,
those who have been cast aside, those who wish they could push the world aside.
We can’t always understand the pain in the hearts of others, but you can.
[we think of… or brief pause]
Help us to listen, help us to care, help us to be there;
Lord, prepare us to serve.

Show us the misused and abused people:
those who have spent their lives being made to feel small or stupid,
Those who have been hurt by the people they should have been able to trust.
[we think of… or brief pause]
Help us to see each person as you see them, unique and essential and made in your image.
Let us treat every individual as you would treat them;
Lord, prepare us to serve.

As the days grow cold, we turn to the warmth of your love.
Help us to be that warmth:
help us to bring cheer,
help us to share joy.
Prepare us to serve and to change lives
As ours have been changed.

Amen.

All the prayers are free to use but I would happily accept a coffee to keep me going!
