Fifth Sunday of Easter, Year C
Inspired by John 13:31-35, Acts 11:1-18 and Revelation 21:1-6.

Opening Prayers or Call to Worship

we meet in a building with walls
but we don’t want to use them to keep the world out.
We meet under a roof
but the last thing we want is to keep you away.
Please come into this place Lord
and help us to batter down old barriers
and to cast aside all division.
Set us free to worship plainly,
to express your love boldly
and to serve the people of an aching world.

Lord, your love spans the universe
and we want to learn to see this world the way you do;
open and boundless, with no us and them, no acceptable and unacceptable people.
We want to feel the world your way,
flinging wide the doors and letting the breath of your creation surround us.
We want to reach out and touch it your way,
opening our hearts to all people, being honest in word and deed.
Lord break down the walls in this world
and those in our minds.

As we look at apparently uncontrollable upheavals around the world,
with refugees fleeing from wars and famines and floods and droughts,
help us to care with your care.
We pray that those who help will receive support and encouragement,
that those who care will give and pray,
and that those who lead nations will be generous in word and deed.
Lord open the hearts of all people
and break down the walls that divide.

Break down the walls that exist in the lives of those we know and love;
walls of pain or anger, of limited ambition, of overstretched time or hope lost.
Give us the courage to ask how we can help
and the words to pray when we don’t know what to do.
Increase our  love for all those around us
and break down the walls that divide.

Help us to batter down the walls that stop us growing as your people
and to leave unhelpful attitudes and entrenched ways behind.
Give us the openness to accept and be blessed by all who come to us,
loving their differences and their new perspectives.
Teach us to prefer listening to talking
so that we can truly learn from each other
and break down the walls that divide.

Let your clear light blaze in the heart of this church
so that we can take it out to the community;
bringing your healing
and telling the wonderful message
that all people are your people,
all are made in your image,
all are loved by you.

All the prayers are free to use but if you would like to make a voluntary payment the price of a coffee would keep me working!
